Death of Usamah Bin Laden: Freedom Fighter or Terrorist?

The reaction says it all, there is celebration in the streets of New York, whilst silence in the streets of the Islamic world; freedom fighter or terrorist depends on whose perspective. There is no doubt many in the Islamic world and the non-Islamic world (e.g. Latin America), are privately mourning the death of Usamah Bin Laden, seen as a symbol of resistance to Western imperialism. Unlike Saddam Hussein and his ilk, Usamah Bin Laden died fighting like a Mujahid, as the old proverb says, he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword.

It is disgusting the way the media constantly highlights the 3000 that perished in 9/11, as if the American and western lives are more valuable than others. The message construed is simple, its Bin Laden and 9/11, there are no other casualties and no other factors. Indeed, the entire narrative is false. They say 9/11 marks the beginning of the conflict, whereas the conflict started from the end of the First World War; the Arabs seeking independence were betrayed (Sykes-Picot treaty) for their support to the Allied forces. Their lands were carved up to suit the interests of the colonialists, who facilitated the migration of the Zionists to Palestine, paving the way for the creation of Israel. Eventually, the Arabs were ‘rewarded’ with Israel and the Palestinian Diaspora (nakba), for their cooperation and service to the colonialists.

What is even more absurd about the simple narrative of Bin Laden and 9/11 is that America is portrayed as the victim. Just the thought makes you laugh, it’s like you have to imagine the US Soldiers dressed as benign priests, rather than killing Iraqis for fun, as the numerous clips leaked on the internet with the awful images of Abu-Ghraib confirms!

Prior to 9/11, 500,000 Iraqi children were killed through barbaric sanctions, and post 9/11 almost a million innocent Iraqis died for those mythical WMDs! To date, nobody has been bought to account for the illegal war built on lies. The losses of innocence are conveniently classed as collateral damage that can be swept under the carpet like dirt! Has anyone been bought to trial for the carnage in Gaza, when the Israelis unleashed disproportionate force on the civilian population, a clear act of state-terrorism?

It is simplistic to call Usamah Bin Laden a terrorist, when his opponent has murdered much more civilians in Iraq, Palestine and Afghanistan, that pre-dates 9/11. Likewise, to call Usamah a religious fanatic is hypocritical, when George Bush is the one claimed to be talking to God who allegedly inspired him to launch the war on the innocent people of Iraq. It is ironic that the Christian God of ‘love’ would order one to wage to war, rather than to turn the other cheek!

Regardless if you agree with the methods used by Usamah and his men, as an individual he outdid his opponents. He was far more eloquent than George Bush, a semi-literate guy with a drink problem, who often embarrassed the US by his numerous idiotic statements. Usamah also had far more integrity than Tony Blair, unlike Blair he never lied and was generous with his wealth, constantly helping the needy, Jason Burke elaborates on this in his book, Al-Qaeda. Whereas it took a lot of media pressure for Tony Blair (who did so well out of the Iraq war), to make some nominal contribution to the British soldiers who suffered losses.

The most important question is – did Usamah succeed to any level or was he a total failure. This depends on how you define success and failure, but we can avoid the debate, by looking at his main objectives. First was to create the ArabicNahda (revival), this never materialised; despite the war waged over Iraq and the revelations of the gruesome events of Abu-Ghraib, the masses in the Arab/Islamic world did not revolt. In fact, the only uprisings we have seen are the recent revolutions sweeping through the Arab world, where the call is unanimous for a democratic government that is free from corruption and nepotism. The masses want secular freedom and democracy, rather than a Caliphate or an Islamic Emirate, they are no longer burning the American flags and chanting anti-Western slogans, they have come to realise that they need to take responsibility and clean their homes.

Secondly, Usamah failed to topple a single regime in the Arab/Islamic world. This is largely because he misread the situation, whilst many sympathise with his grievances, but do not support the creation of an Islamic State or an Islamic Emirate. It means one has to engage the masses in the Arab world politically to make the case for an Islamic State, how such a state can overcome the numerous issues that divide the Arab and Islamic world, and bring about unity. Thus, instead of waging wars on the West, they should have focused on building a stable prosperous Afghanistan based on the Sharia model that could act as a shining example. They could have shown how the various tribes of Afghanistan unified, overcoming their historical animosity; this would have had greater resonance in the Arab and Islamic world. However, the Taliban remained largely Pashtun based, and the Arabs remained as their guests, despite professing unity based on the Islamic laws and values.

You have been at war with someone for hundreds of years, you will be at war with SOMEONE until you make the mistake of attacking the USA again.
We have a muslim President at the moment but soon a true American will surface, at that time we will show our true power, don't mess with the USA, Just a warning.
It seems we found that one dirt bag muslim in a cave, we found the other in a multi thousand square foot house.

  3. Can you believe this ?

They[US] searched for OBL for 10 years, sent thousands of troops, spent billion dollars but disposed OBL's body in 10 hours, didn't take 10 pics and didn't shoot a 10 minute video on him ? ?

  4. This is bullshit...he was never a freedom fighter. Islam does not ask its followers to blast buildings in a city and kill innocent office goers caught unawares....it was for the best if Israel's fighting and American defense forces and whitehouse bureaucrats double standards and strategizing of unrest in the world could be combat directly with strategy and regrouping for countering such bad behavior rather than kill innocents involved in trade around the globe......my take, may Allah reward him for his islamic manners as he was a good muslim that way but for the attacks, I plead mercy from God because indeed the attacks were a mistake from a muslim whcih jeopardized many muslims lives and families around the globe. We need leaders for resurrecting Islamic leadership not such hiding perpetrators...Long live Islam and death of terrorism because Islam doesn't preach that!!!

One must understand(especially the blogger) that it's Allah's decree that any oppression or taunt happens to muslims(like in palestine etc.) and we are no one to adopt unislamic ways to achieve freedom or denounce the oppressing factors(like US and Israel). Rather, we should group, strategize and combat such nations and people and resort to war if things don't work out smooth. What Usama has done with such attacks is wrong(jeopardized all Islamic people's lives and views of people around the world about Muslims in general).

  7. Hmmm....What can we say, In my point of view, he could be American Agent too, thats why we don't have any evidence of him of being dead. I am amazed by the news that he is buried in sea...Isnt that funny? Were they afraid of his dead body too? :D Its just a conspiracy. And what I am looking forward now is that the Americans will soon start attacking Pak like Afghanistan and Iraq by having a reason that Pakistan has many Terrorists hidden in its areas. May Allah keep Muslims in peace. Ameen

  8. my point of view i think no one is responsible but we Muslims our self.... we somewhere failed and hurted Allah alot that is why we r facing such ignorance from the society... so instead of thinking what US did and what Isreal and what bush did or OBL we shud concentrate on our own amaal coz we all knw that thee world will come to an end soon and we will perish... so we shud prepare ourselves for hereafter instead of fighting on such issues... Pray and ask Allah's mercy on mankind coz the coming time is worse than what it looks now.... May Allah have mercy and bless us... Ameen

  10. May Peace and blessing of Almighty God be upon all.
After reading from various source, i come to conclusion that, Osama is/was a good person a Mujhid. He fighted for years for Afgan with Ussr.

Its Zionist policy (america is just a broker thats why i am using Zionist, Americans are slave of them )to 'Use and Throw', example: Once Iraq was a prospering country and S.Hussain was its friend.. But you all know what they did with him.. So with Osama , USA HAD TAKEN THE WORK WHICH HE NEEDed WITH OSAMA i.e. To defeat USSR FORCE and than to sit on it.. As you are seeing..

May Allah give him peace.. Amen.. You can read an interview of him published on UMMAT NEWS PAPER.. At

  11. The fatwas generated by Osama had serious theological flaws..
The Holy Prophet(S.A.W) had strongly said that women, children and non-combaters should never be attacked during Jihad. Also attacking people unawares is haram in Islam. If he was a true mujahid he should have attacked the U.S forces and military personnel who were creating chaos only and not innocent citizens.

Osama considered women and children to be legitimate targets of Jhihad which is completely unnaceptable in Islam..

His intention was that of a mujahid but he ended up taking the wrong route.

At the end all he did was tarnish the image of Islam world over.

Allah knows best. May He keep us in peace.

  12. All these above comments sound idiotic. Some people think their so smart and giving comments based on the information gathered by Media such as CNN, BBC etc etc or what they think is right. Have you guys witnessed any events taking place in front of by these Mujahideens killing innocent people and children. a brother names Muhammad Ashrafali posted a link, check that an interview given by the fallen warrior. U guys know nothing about the beyond the imagination tactics of western Zionists. Let the ones who knows it better do the job. If you don't have the power to resist. just keep quite. May Peace be prevail. Allah knows the best. Prophet (Saw) was a mercy to the mankind, not only for muslims. We have to fight the evil, not Christians or any other non-muslims. Their our brothers & sisters as well. Fight the shaitan..who fights against us in the form of humans...Truth will be prevailed.
