Using toothpaste whilst fasting

Is it permissible to brush one's teeth using toothpaste when fasting?

Praise be to Allaah.

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) was asked about using toothpaste whilst fasting. He said: there is nothing wrong with that so long as one is careful to avoid swallowing any of it, just as it is prescribed in Islam for the fasting person to use the siwaak (tooth-stick)
Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 4/247

Shaykh Muhammad al-Saalih ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:

… This leads us to the question: Is it permissible to use a toothbrush and toothpaste whilst fasting or not?

The answer is that it is permitted, but it is preferable not to use them because the toothpaste is too strong and may go down into the throat. Instead of doing that during the day, one should do it at night.

  1. I am a dentist and would like to suggest that, u can do brushing without toothpaste in the morning and with toothpaste in sehri and at night.

Toothpaste is just to play the role of surfactant i.e. it loosens the stains and debris on the tooth's surface and has a little added advantage of freshened breathe, so in order to clean your teeth during fasting you can brush your teeth without using toothpaste.

  2. Do it at night? But when you wake up aftar Sahr than you're mouth smell really bad and this is very inconvenient for other people too which is un-Islamic. So,Muslims SHOULD brush their teeth after doing Sahr ! Or if you forgot then do it while you're fasting but take little extra care so that paste doesn't go down you throat!
