How 100,000 Britons have chosen to become Muslim... and average convert is 27-year-old white woman
By JACK DOYLE
- About 5,200 people in UK adopted faith last year alone
The number of Muslim converts in Britain has passed 100,000, fuelled by a surge in young white women adopting the Islamic faith.
The figure has almost doubled in ten years – with the average convert now a 27-year-old white woman fed up with British consumerism and immorality.
The numbers, revealed in a study by multi-faith group Faith Matters, have led to claims that the country is undergoing a process of ‘Islamification’.
The survey of converts revealed nearly two thirds were women, more than 70 per cent were white and the average age at conversion was just 27.
But the organisation’s report argued that most converts saw their religion as ‘perfectly compatible’ with living in Britain.
It said: ‘Converts do not represent a devious fifth column determined to undermine the Western way of life – this is a group of normal people united in their adherence to a religion which they, for the most part, see as perfectly compatible with Western life.’
Convert: Lauren Booth, the sister-in-law of former Prime Minister Tony Blair, attracted a lot of publicity when she announced she had adopted the Islamic faith last year
The report estimated around 5,200 men and women have adopted Islam over the past 12 months, including 1,400 in London. Nearly two-thirds were women, more than 70 per cent were white and the average age at conversion was 27.
In 2001, there were an estimated 60,000 Muslim converts in Britain. Since then, the country has seen the spread of violent Islamist extremism and terror plots, including the July 7 bombings.
Converts who have turned to terror include Nicky Reilly, who tried to blow up a restaurant in Bristol with a nail bomb, shoe bomber Richard Reid and July 7 bomber Germaine Lindsay.
But the report said the number of converts sucked into extremism represented a ‘very small minority’.
The survey, conducted by Kevin Brice from Swansea University, asked converts for their views on the negative aspects of British culture.
They identified alcohol and drunkenness, a ‘lack of morality and sexual permissiveness’, and ‘unrestrained consumerism’.
More than one in four accepted there was a ‘natural conflict’ between being a devout Muslim and living in the UK. Nine out of ten women converts said their change of religion had led to them dressing more conservatively. More than half started wearing a head scarf and 5 per cent had worn the burka.
More than half also said they experienced difficulties after converting because of negative attitudes among their family.
Last year Lauren Booth, sister-in-law of former prime minister Tony Blair, attracted widespread publicity when she announced that she had converted to Islam.
Fiyaz Mughal, director of Faith Matters, said: ‘Conversion to Islam has been stigmatised by the media and wrongly associated with extremist ideologies and discriminatory cultural practices.’

Dr Naik, please explain this. The wife MUST respond to the calls for sex from the husband every time he calls her, and she is not allowed to refuse(unless she is sick or doing something obligatory in deen or has a valid excuse), otherwise she can be beaten. Is the Muslim wife the sex servant of the husband? islamqa.com/en/ref/33597/refuse%20intercourse
ReplyDeleteBrother tomasz,
ReplyDeleteWhat you have written above, I cannot find it in the reference what you have given. Don't try to fool the people. Tell the truth if you u r truth full. In the article it is clearly written at the starting
"The woman does not have the right to refuse her husband, rather she must respond to his request every time he calls her, so long as that will not harm her or keep her from doing an obligatory duty."
@ Tomasz
ReplyDeleteRead the complete answer on that link.. Dont just take something out of context.
@Tomasz,
ReplyDeleteWhoever you are, Its quite obvious what you are trying to do. However, let me help you :)
1: Question doesn't support the article.
2: Not he right place to ask a question.
3: Your question has been answered in the lights of Quran and Hadith at your reference point. And its pretty clear.
Islam not only answer our questions, it justifies and clarifies as well :)
About the article: Loved it :) Jazakallah Khayr
Whomever is answering to Tomasz I agree that he/she may not have formed the question in a proper way, hence it seems out of the context. But,even though being a muslim and obeying Allah and believing in him and in Islam, I still sometimes feel that Islam is unjust to women. Why men are allowed to sleep with their slaves? and women not? Why they can have wives and women can't?
ReplyDeleteSana,ur question is good, but the Allah have all the answers on our issues.just tell me that if the a woman keeps more than one husbands than how she know that whose child is in her womb??? And what u r telling abt slaves ( baandi-- in arabic)is right but at that time when this slave system was in vouge there was no any system of exchanging the captives so, these women who were caught in war (bcoz they participate in war)distributed in muslims and these muslims men tried to turn them (in Islam) by their good behaviour, and their born child treated as the legal child in society,And it was seen that most of them accepted islam.
ReplyDeleteIf they release these woman captive in society without any authority than it was the chances that society can go corrupt.
And it is the islam only which allow such treatment with woman war captive, other wise all know that what is the position of woman war captive at that time.It is Islam who provide these war captive faith, respect, morality etc etc..
I really liked your answer Abid Hussain Sir, but what about men captives who controls them? Can u think about sharing your partner with someone else? Its heart tattering. How can a women bear that thing? We bear child in our womb not by our choice. I love being a muslim a lot, but there are certain things like this which pricks me all the time. Once I was reading Surah Rehman and I went through it meaning it is such a wonderful Surah, but again in one of the ending ayats I dont know which one particularly ( If you want I can find it for you) it stated that men will be provided with VIRGIN slaves in Jannah that's so rude. Again what about women? It doesn't mean that I want something like that it just haunts me that why men are given so much importance? While we are the ones who sacrifice the most. Please, don`t take my arguments in a negative way I am just asking some questions which have always bothered me and you seem to be a knowledgeable person. I believe in Islam, but I even believe that men and women are NOT treated equally. Sometime I feel there has been some kind of manipulation done with the translation of Quran.
ReplyDeleteSister sana, first of all i would like to clarify you that i am not an islamic scholar. But as far as you second part of the question is concerned... i remember seeing a video of Dr. Zakir Naik regarding the provision of Hoors and i can assure you that the answer is not what you think it is... i have tried to find that video again but in turn i found this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fry1zZizHtY&feature=related
ReplyDeletei am still not satisfied at the answer that i have found and posted compared to the answer given by Dr. Zakir Naik which i had seen long time back. Inshallah, i shall post the link as soon as i find it.
As far as virgin slave in the jannah is concerned... this is all i had knowledge about and i tried to answer in the best possible manner.
And regarding the argument of yours that men and women are not treated equally.... Sister... i disagree with you. Yes men and women are treated equally in islam. BUT, equality need not mean Identicality. For Full answer refer to this video... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dg9FQSg_2WM
Regarding your last thoughts about quran that the quran could have been manipulated... Sister, i am hundred percent sure that shaitaan is playing around with you. Allah says in the quran...
This is the Book (the Qur'an), whereof there is no doubt, a guidance to those who are Al-Muttaqun [the pious and righteous persons who fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which He has forbidden) and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)].Surah Baqarah ayah 2
Also allah says in the quran..
[If you have doubts about what We have sent down to Our servant, produce another surah equal to it, and call your witnesses, besides Allah, if you are telling the truth. If you do not do that – and you will not do it – then fear the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, made ready for the unbelievers. ] (Al-Baqarah 2: 23-24)
[Say: “If both humanity and jinn banded together to produce the like of this Qur'an, they could never produce anything like it, even if they backed each other up.” ] (Al-Israa’ 17: 88)
[Will they not ponder the Qur'an? If it had been from other than Allah, they would have found many inconsistencies in it.] (An-Nisaa’ 4: 82)
And last but not the least....
[We have sent down the Reminder, and We will preserve it.] (Al-Hijr 15: 9)
Ever since the Qur’an was revealed, fourteen centuries ago, no one has been able to produce a single chapter like the chapters of the Qur’an in their beauty, eloquence, splendor, wise legislation, true information, true prophecy and other perfect attributes. Also, note that the smallest chapter in the Qur’an (Chapter 108) is only ten words, yet no one has ever been able to meet this challenge then or today.Indeed almighty Allah has stayed true to His promise as the Glorious Quran we have today is exactly the same Quran which was revealed to our Beloved Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), not even one alphabet of the Quran has been changed and the following shows the excellent way in which Quran was compiled and preserved.
So in the end sister... i would like to suggest you to pray to Allah to guide you to straight path and keep you away from shaitaan and help you understand the quran and make your imaan strong.
Sister Sana... i Got the link regarding the hoors
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIiRh0c9sXI
Hope that helps
Thank you brother I got what you meant to say, but you got me wrong when I said that there is manipulation with the translation of Quran. I didn't mean to say that Quran has been manipulated ( I know Allah has taken responsibility of Quran). I meant the translations are manipulated in some languages. I have read the translation and when I read it, it very clearly mentioned that Hoors mean virgin women hence that was disturbing me a lot. Thank you very much for your videos I was constantly checking this website since I posted my comment for an answer. And Alhumdolillah my imaan is mashaallah very strong for that reason I was finding the correct answer from someone instead of deviating from my religion. I believe in Allah and in Islam, and my heart says that if Allah says that he is the one who is responsible for justice then its obvious that when a person who doesn't know somethings will search for an answer for somethings that he/she is unsure of. Jazakallahkhair.
ReplyDeleteRegarding the doubt of yours concerning the translation of the Quran... No! the text and the translation never can be the same. The translation can come close to the text but not same. For answer watch this video from time 5:00
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjQc7E3l8J4&feature=related
Also i just wanted to tell you that you are doing a great job of enquiring. Since the cure of ignorance is enquiry. And according several hadiths of the prophet acquiring knowledge is a must.
And you have pointed out an another important topic regarding the justice of Allah. I thank u for that. Allah says in the Quran.
"This is because of that which your hands had forwarded. And verily, Allah is not unjust to His slaves." Surah Anfal Ayah 51
And after all this conversation regarding the hoors... i come to two conclusions of which one could be right. 1> men will get female hoors and women will get men hoors. OR 2> Men will get female hoors and women would get something equivalent that is good since Allah is the one who does PERFECT justice. And Allah knows the Best. And also if there is anything else "Allah knows the Best".( the second point i am raising if i consider what you have said about the translation is right )
So now, regarding the hoors, there is no need to worry so much since Allah is the one who does perfect justice.
Also one more thing just came to my mind that the deen islam is just PERFECT and COMPLETE with perfect guidelines for us to follow Alhamdulillah
coming to the basic question about the translation: since the translation cannot be the same... there may be different interpretation of the quran by different scholars. And so at this part i agree with u. But at the same time we must be satisfied that Allah is the one who does not do injustice in the least bit and leave it all up to him and trust him inshallah.
ReplyDeletebrother tomasz,
ReplyDeletei feel dat d answer to ur question will b more effective if it comes from a woman's perspective..
my answer to ur question is dat since islam FORBIDS a marriage widout d consent of d woman, den it is obvious dat a lady is entering into marriage knowing all d consequences and changes it is going to bring in her life wid her full consent.. hence i dont see y any lady should deny her husband his rights under normal circumstances.. n since islam allows an exception wen circumstances are 'not normal' den der is no reason to consider a woman any kind of slave...:) also if a woman does deny her husband his rights for no valid reason it is bound to have a negative effect on their relationship.. its basic psychology..:)
my dear sister sana,
ReplyDeletei fully agree wid u wen u say dat we dont get to choose our gender.. but i would lyk to tel u dat though nature has given us d capabiltity of giving birth which involves a lot of pain, it also gives us immense priveleges for it.. something which a man can never get(if dat makes u happy)..e.g
1.choosing d name of d child-the first right lies wid d mom
2.in terms of respect we are commanded to respect our mother 3 times more dan father(if dat makes u even happier)
hence i request u to consider motherhood a privelege..
but since every privelege comes wid a responsibility and contraints dis one also does..
hence,to protect our lineage we are not allowed to marry multiple men.
i would also like to remind u dat men are not on dis earth to enjoy n live a carefree life.. dey have to work and take full financial responsibilty for maintaining der entire family.. dey will also b questioned on d day of judgement if any lady who is under der guardianship commits any sin.. now who wud want dat?? :)
also,u can think for urself wen u say dat sharin ur partner is heart shatterin.. y will any husband wanna even consider sum1 else if he's completely loyal to his wife??? der is sum problem wid "HIS" LOYALTY if he does so, isnt it??? and if unfortunately a man does desire another, den isnt it better for him to legally be bound to her n take responsibilty for her, dan commit a sin n spread evil in society???
Dear Sister Sara,
ReplyDeleteI am sorry that I am replying you so late and may be you won't even check for my replies now, but please have a look at this website http://www.onislam.net/english/ask-the-scholar/family/children-a-parenthood/175180.html?Parenthood=. It clearly states that right of naming lies with the father if differences occur. I mean even if you were right who knows the rules in favour of a woman in islam and who obeys them. And I don't think that today men's loyalty can be blamed for all the behayayi going on in this world it is just threat to women that they get good husbands. I have seen people marrying more than once without their wife's permission and even not treating their wives equally. I know they will suffer a lot on the day of judgement, but will the woman be rewarded????
